How Far Can a Bar Go?

  1. Let's start with a plain, simple bar. Is it boring? How far can we go with such a plain, simple and boring shape?
  2. Now from the menu, select "Edit" "Clone" "Create Tiled Colnes..." as in the figure below:

Set the clone options as follows:
    • Symmetry: default (simple translation).
    • Shift: Change Shift X to -90.0% per column.
    • Scale: default no change.
    • Rotation: Change Angle to 2.0o per column.
    • Blur & opacity: default no change.
    • Color: default no change.
    • Trace: default (no trace).
Now set the number of clones to 1 rows and 200 columns. Click the Create button, we get the following:
  3. It become a little bit interesting now, eh? We have 200 bars rotating across the screen. Select any of them and use your keyboard to type uppercase D. That is Shift-d. It will select the original by doing this. When we change the original, as for clones, all 200 bars change too.
    • Let's change the transparency to some low 20. Let's also change the width of the border to 0.1 pixel.
    • Make the box bigger.
    • Make the box smaller.
    • Make the box longer.
    • Make the box wider.
    • Or something like this:
  4. Do you feel a little bit less boring? Let's cheer up with some color.
Select the orignal bar, change the fill with Undefined by click the big question mark:

Then bring up the tiled clone dialog and change the Color tab as follows:

And this is what you get:
  5. There is also a Randomize options on every tabs of the tile clone dialog, we can use them to create something like this:
  6. The above samples all use one dimension. We can get more complex output by enabling both columns and rows. (Note: This step makes a lot more clones, it may hang your computer or crash inkscape.)
The following picture is achieved with these parameters:
    • The original rectangle: Filled with 10 transparency and undefined color. border width 0.1 px, color black and transparency 127.
    • Symmetry: default (simple translation).
    • Shift: Change Shift X to -95.0% per column. Change Shift Y to -95.0% per row. Put 10.0% in both Randomize.
    • Scale: Put 10.0% in both Randomize.
    • Rotation: Change Angle to 18.0o to both per row and per column.
    • Blur & opacity: default no change.
    • Color: Change initial color to red. Change H Per column to 0.8%.
    • Trace: default (no trace).
Create the clones with 20 rows 20 columns, then scale the original to about three times of its size.

    A detailed look:
That is it, hope you can enjoy the excitment of a plain bar.
